Regardless of the type of sapling you choose, you must ensure that it is directly from the producer and that it is grafted and certified. The sapling should be neither too young nor too old. Young saplings (under 1 year old) may not develop sufficient roots, while older saplings (4-5 years old) may be damaged during transport. Furthermore, you need to select a sapling variety suitable for the microclimate of the region where you intend to grow it.
Generally, walnut saplings are best planted in the autumn and spring months. Planting in the autumn helps the sapling's root system adapt to the soil during the winter, resulting in a stronger resurgence in the spring. Spring planting is preferred, especially in regions with cold climates. Planting after the risk of frost has completely passed prevents damage to the sapling. Therefore, regional climate conditions must be taken into account when determining the planting time.
